What's the best way to run a two-mile XC race?

  • I am on my middle school cross country team and my goal is to win a race. I've gotten close, but my pacing seems to be wrong. I've lead 3/4 of the race in first, but then someone passed me at the end. I got second place, three seconds behind first. Anyway, I just want to hear suggestions on when to go fast and when to hold back a little bit. I seem to not have enough left in me toward the end. I'm a fast starter. Help! I have two meets left...

  • after lots of experiance in running xc I must say the most valuable info a runner can know is that pace is key. start to fast nothing left in the end too slow and get left behind. right now you are too young to know whay you are capable of doing in a race. so the key for you will be to run lots of extra building your stamina. dont start so fast keep the leader within reach. allow them to make the mistake of starting too fast and make your move in the last 400 meters or so. lead runners also have to work harder to block the wind for everyone else so drafting is good too. Trust me on these things and you will see improvements. good luck and kick some butt

  • My coach always told me to never lead a race unless the 2nd placer is much slower than I am. Stay right with them throughout the race and at the end give it your all and pass them. Make them do the work of fighting the wind and making the pace. Just work off of them. Make the other runner as beneficial to yourself as possible. That's how they've probably been using you. So you can do all the hard work and they can get the final glory.

It's not about who gets to the one mile mark first, it's about who crosses the line first.
