Canon EOS 40D or XTi?

  • I'm thinking about upgrading my kit (currently 10D and a few not so
    expensive lenses)

I'd love to get a full frame 5D (or 1D Mark III) but thats out of my
    budget range.

I would like 40D, but I was thinking about going with XTi and the
money I save, could help me buy something better a couple of years
    down the road.

One major difference I see id Digic II vs Digic III (besides the better
    body)

Is the difference between Digic II and III worth the cost?
Again.. I'm willing to sacrifice the body for a few hundred bucks I save.

    What would you do?

  • A buddy of mine got the xti, I got the 40D. I like mine, he likes his. He spent a little more on the first lens, which I think is a better investment. I got a Sigma 28-70 mid-level lens. I guess in the end, it's what matters to you that will be the deciding factor.

  • I've had a 10D for over two years and just got my 40D this morning. Digic is just the processor shuttling the internals and I don't see that as weighing on the decision at all, unless 6fps is really needed - additional throughput is all I really get from it.

It's the magnesium body, additional size (for my large hands - it still feels tiny without a grip, which should arrive tomorrow), thumbwheel on the back, better noise performance, theoretically, due to an improved sensor, and a few ergonomic issues that made the difference for me. Honestly, I never considered an XTi due to the size and lack of a thumb wheel.

You've raised a good point here.. I'm used to the thumbwheel...
I do not care about the 6fps, but I thought digic III was better at noise
reduction and marginally better at low light sensitivity.

I'm willing to sacrifice magnesium body. I'll go and try out the XTi and see if I can
    live with the controls.

  • Hopefully it won't be long till a 450D / XTi-2 (http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_450D.html) comes out.

  • buy a 40d, it's a good choice

  • 40D has many more improvements than DIGIC III and lower noise....check out B&H Photo or dpreview.com for all the specifics. Live View totally does not fit my way of shooting, but I'll be getting a 40D as soon as feasible.

  • I'm using my trusty 10D. If I wanted to move up, I'd go with the 40D.

I'm still buying glass. "L" glass is addicting:)

  • What would you do?

If I owned a 10D I would have upgraded to the XTi a year ago. Why did you wait so long? :D Going from 6 MP to 10 MP is significant.

Seriously, I don't understand the huge price difference between the XTi and the 40D. Live view isn't worth it. The 14-bit resolution is nice, but it costs a lot.

Should I wait a bit long until they come up with DIGIC III in the XTi grade body?
    :)

I do not think at this point the MP is important.. but the improvement in
speed and auto focus I can definitely use.
